Full biography

David Sudlow is a designer with a passion for museums, exhibitions and architecture. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in London in 2004, David has applied his design and communication skills to making creative and engaging experiential design. He has produced well-known and awarded work, for clients large and small, public and private, national and international.

David started his career with a short period working as an independent graphic designer. He then joined the London office of museum design specialists Ralph Appelbaum Associates, where he spent three years working on high-profile major exhibition design projects. This included two years leading the graphic design for the permanent galleries at the London Transport Museum, leading the final design stage for the Culloden Battlefield Memorial Visitor Centre and final artwork for the temporary exhibition Nelson & Napoleon at the National Maritime Museum.

In 2007 David joined Nick Bell Design to lead the graphic design for the permanent galleries at the Great North Museum in Newcastle upon Tyne. He is now senior designer and creative design manager and leads the design team. Working closely alongside Nick Bell, he directs and manages the design for all exhibition, museum and environmental graphics projects. Recent major projects include Atmosphere: Exploring climate science, a new permanent gallery at the Science Museum in London, new permanent galleries and wayfinding for the Benjamin Franklin Museum in Philadelphia, the first permanent gallery for the British Postal Museum & Archive at Blists Hill, Shropshire, and wayfinding and environmental graphics for the Stanislavsky Factory in Moscow.

Between 2004 and 2008 David held a number of teaching positions, most notably associate lecturer in graphic design at the London College of Communication and visiting tutor in graphic design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria. In 2009 David gave the keynote address at the London College of Communication’s School of Graphic Design graduation ceremony.

David has established successful working relationships with exhibition designers, architects, museum directors, curators, educators, project managers and build contractors. These links have deepened his knowledge of experiential and environmental design, and enabled him to embed himself in its process.

David holds an MA in Communication Art & Design from the Royal College of Art in London, and received a distinction for his written thesis ‘Communication Origination’. He also holds a BA (Hons.) First Class in Typography/ Graphic & Media Design from the London College of Printing (now London College of Communication, University of the Arts London) and is a member of the Society for Environmental Graphic Design (SEGD).
