Biography David Sudlow is a graphic designer, a specialist at designing and art directing museum and exhibition design projects and galleries. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2004, David has worked on well-known and high-profile national and international museum design projects. He is currently responsible for the design and project management of all exhibition and museum projects at Nick Bell Design. For three years, from 2004 to 2007, David worked for the London office of established museum designers Ralph Appelbaum Associates. He joined as a graphic designer and went on to lead the graphic design for the award-winning London Transport Museum project (2005–2007) and was acting lead graphic designer for Culloden Battlefield visitor centre (2007). The close working relationship between 2D and 3D designers enabled David to become fully versed in the museum design process, knowledge he used to ensure graphic design is a completely integral part of exhibition design. In November 2007 David joined Nick Bell Design, to lead the graphic design for the Great North Museum project (completed May 2009). He quickly worked his way up to the position of Creative Design Manager, overseeing design and management of all exhibition and museum projects. In the past three years David has successfully completed major museum projects for Great North Museum, Newcastle-upon-Tyne (2009), Museum of the Post Office in the Community, Blists Hill (2009), and he is currently leading design for Benjamin Franklin Museum, Philadelphia (due to complete 2012) and a new gallery at Science Museum, London (due to complete late 2010). He also design-managed wayfinding and signage projects for Great North Museum (2009) and Stanislavsky Factory, Moscow (2009). Since opening, Great North Museum has won a number of awards from across the industry. David has also held a number of teaching positions over the last six years. From January 2004 till October 2007 David was an Associate Lecturer in Graphic Design at the London College of Communication, teaching on the Information Design pathway of the BA Graphic & Media Design programme. From December 2006 till January 2008 he was a visiting tutor at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna, Austria. In addition, David has created and given numerous design workshops and lectures, including the 2006 and 2007 International Design Summer School held at the LCC. David was a co-founder of East Studio (June 2006), with Paulus Dreibholz, Cathi Nippe and Nils Kloth. This was a collaborative 'design office' of four independent graphic designers who collaborated on a number of projects and teaching initiatives. East Studio ran for two years and continues as a forum without premises. David is also a co-founder of Teaching Type, an educational initiative formed at East Studio. David has an MA in Communication Art & Design from the Royal College of Art (2004), collecting a distinction for his thesis 'Communication Origination', and a BA (Hons.) First Class in Typo/Graphic & Media Design from the London College of Printing (2002) (now London College of Communication). Spring 2010 |
